Rolf Rastad & Adolf Relling side table
Very rare Syklus side table and concealed bar cabinet, designed by the Norwegian partnership of Adolf Relling and Rolf Rastad and produced by Rasmus Solberg in Norway in 1962. The original label identifies the designers and producer and records the design as the first-prize recipient in the Norwegian Design Competition of 1962.
The side table has a compact circular form executed in rosewood, displaying warm reddish-brown coloring with strongly figured dark grain. A straight division across the top incorporates two flush-mounted brass hinges, allowing the lid sections to open while maintaining a continuous tabletop when closed. The cylindrical body is supported by slender round legs connected by low stretchers.
The fitted black interior is organized radially around the circular body. Wedge-shaped compartments accommodate bottles and bar accessories, while a divided central section and deep suspended lower container provide additional storage. This concealed dual function reflects postwar Scandinavian design principles, combining a clear geometric exterior with space-efficient and adaptable use.
Relling and Rastad were known for Norwegian furniture characterized by rational construction, functional planning and restrained organic detailing. Rasmus Solberg translated these principles into production through carefully integrated hardware, precise cabinetmaking and a coordinated interior system. The Syklus model belongs to Norwegian mid-century modernism, with an emphasis on craftsmanship, material contrast and unobtrusive utility.
Diameter 59 cm (23.2 in); height 42.5 cm (16.7 in).
The cabinet is in good vintage condition, with small signs of use and light age-related surface wear.
