Information

This freestanding desk was designed in the 1950s by the Danish designer Severin Hansen and produced by Haslev Møbelsnedkeri, a workshop renowned for its fine craftsmanship and high-quality cabinetmaking. Hansen is particularly noted for his elegant, minimalist designs characterized by clean lines and meticulous attention to detail. His signature feature, the seamless mitred joints at the corners, is clearly visible in this piece and has become a hallmark of Danish modern design. The desk carries the Danish Furnituremakers’ Control mark, which certifies authenticity and quality, as well as the Haslev workshop’s original label.

The desk is constructed in rosewood, a material highly prized in mid-century Scandinavian furniture making for its rich, expressive grain and deep color. The surface shows striking natural patterns ranging from warm reddish-brown tones to darker, almost black streaks, creating a vivid and tactile surface. The craftsmanship of the mitred corners and tapered legs reflects Hansen’s rigorous precision and emphasizes the sculptural quality of the design.

The front of the desk is fitted with a series of drawers, each with a brass keyhole, and accompanied by a brass key, adding a refined metallic contrast to the organic rosewood. The drawers are framed seamlessly into the structure, maintaining the geometric purity of the form. This combination of functionality and understated luxury exemplifies the Danish approach to modern furniture, where practicality and beauty are intertwined.

The desk has been carefully restored and is in excellent vintage condition, with only minimal traces of age and use visible as a light patina, which enhances its authenticity and depth of character. Its freestanding design means it can be positioned openly in a space, with all sides finished to the same high standard.

Dimensions: 143 cm wide, 75 cm deep, and 71 cm high (approximately 56.3 x 29.5 x 28 inches).
