Side tables
This rare pair of side tables was produced by Svensk Fur in Sweden during the 1950s. Though the designer remains unknown, the design embodies key aspects of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, prioritizing natural materials, organic forms, and harmonious proportions. The tabletops are made from solid Swedish pine, finished in warm tones that highlight the wood’s grain and color variations, ranging from honey-yellow to golden brown. The surfaces feature smooth contours with rounded edges and biomorphic shapes, reflecting the influence of freeform organic design popular in the postwar era.
Each table is supported by three tapered legs crafted from black-lacquered wood, creating a striking contrast with the light pine tops. The legs end in original brass sabots with rounded pads, which provide subtle decorative accents as well as functional stability. Additional brass inlays near the corners of the tabletops serve as minimalist embellishments, enhancing the sculptural quality of the pieces and demonstrating meticulous craftsmanship and material contrast.
Svensk Fur played a significant role in the mid-20th-century Swedish movement to elevate native pine from a utilitarian resource to a material suited for fine furniture production. The branding on the underside of the tables confirms their origin with the “Svensk Fur” mark, certifying the use of locally sourced and processed Swedish pine. This effort was part of broader national initiatives to promote sustainable forestry and celebrate design rooted in Sweden’s natural heritage.
The tables are in very good vintage condition, exhibiting light wear consistent with age and use, including minor surface marks and a warm patina on the wood and brass elements. Their versatile design makes them suitable as side or occasional tables and exemplifies regional craftsmanship aligned with the wider Scandinavian design ethos of the 1950s.
Each table measures 60 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 51 cm in height, approximately 23.6 inches wide, 19.7 inches deep, and 20.1 inches high.
