Information

This rare mid-century sideboard or console table, of unknown designer, was produced in Scandinavia during the 1950s. The piece is primarily constructed from solid pine, featuring lacquered sliding doors and a painted base structure. The two-tone front presents a striking contrast between matte ultramarine blue and off-white lacquer, creating a geometric, color-blocked visual language influenced by post-war functionalism and De Stijl aesthetics. The pine wood grain is clearly visible on the top and interior shelving, adding tactile and material richness against the opaque doors.

The frame rests on an architectural base composed of painted wooden sled-style legs joined by an angular stretcher, lending both visual stability and structural rigidity. The legs and base share the same blue tone as one of the sliding doors, ensuring a cohesive color palette. The joinery is simple and robust, reflecting vernacular Scandinavian carpentry traditions of the period. Small brass fittings, including a recessed brass screw visible on the top surface, add refined material detail.

Inside, adjustable pine shelving offers flexible storage that is partially visible depending on the position of the sliding doors. This combination of open and closed compartments, along with the compact dimensions, makes the piece adaptable to a variety of residential and architectural interiors. Though the designer remains unidentified, the sideboard embodies the Nordic modernist ethos of economical material use, bold color application, and rational design.

The piece is in original vintage condition, showing signs of age such as surface abrasions, edge wear, and minor lacquer loss, particularly on the base and doors. The finish has been preserved unrestored to maintain historical integrity and material authenticity.

Dimensions measure 100 cm wide, 35 cm deep, and 75.5 cm high, approximately 39.4 inches wide, 13.8 inches deep, and 29.7 inches high.
