Information

This very rare sideboard is most likely produced in Sweden during the 1960s, represents a highly refined example of Scandinavian modern cabinetmaking. The piece combines architectural structure with carefully composed proportions, elevated on a separate stand that gives the cabinet a light and distinguished presence.

The cabinet is executed in rosewood, displaying a rich reddish-brown tone with pronounced black veining and symmetrical grain patterns across the doors. The veneer layout on the double doors is carefully mirrored, creating a balanced and decorative front while maintaining a strict geometric composition. The brass hardware forms a central circular escutcheon on the larger cabinet doors, functioning both as a visual focal point and as a locking mechanism. Smaller brass fittings and pulls complement the overall composition, introducing a subtle contrast between the warm wood and the muted golden metal surfaces.

Internally, the left section opens to reveal adjustable shelving in a darker-toned interior, emphasizing depth and material richness. The right section features a drop-front door that opens to a writing or serving surface, supported by brass hardware. Behind this section are additional shelves and compartments, accompanied by four drawers fitted with curved brass handles. The drawer fronts continue the rosewood grain pattern, reinforcing the cohesive material treatment throughout the piece.

The cabinet rests on a separate stand in solid wood with a darker tone, possibly stained oak or teak, designed with straight legs and subtly shaped corner brackets beneath the apron. A horizontal stretcher reinforces the structure while maintaining visual lightness. This elevated construction reflects Scandinavian design principles of the period, where storage furniture was often lifted from the floor to enhance proportion and spatial clarity.

Although the designer remains unidentified, the sideboard demonstrates characteristics associated with high-quality Swedish production in the 1960s, including precise joinery, well-balanced proportions, and restrained decorative detailing. The integration of rosewood veneer and brass fittings aligns with the era’s interest in luxurious yet controlled material expression, typical of Scandinavian modernism during the late mid-century period.

The piece is in good vintage condition with visible signs of use and natural patina. The rosewood surfaces show minor surface wear and small marks consistent with age, while the brass elements display oxidation and tonal variation. The interior remains well preserved, and the drop-front mechanism functions as intended.
