Stig Lindberg bowl
This small ceramic bowl was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden during the 1960s. It is made from stoneware and finished with a distinctive glaze in deep green and turquoise blue tones, creating a rich, mottled surface that emphasizes both texture and color depth. The interior features a radiating pattern of vertical lines that repeat rhythmically from the center outward, forming a geometric motif that is both decorative and structural.
The bowl is wheel-thrown and finished with a slightly rounded lip and continuous curvature that rises from a narrow base, creating a hemispherical form. The glaze treatment is especially characteristic of Lindberg’s mid-century ceramic production, combining bold colorwork with intricate surface detail. The interplay between matte and gloss in the glaze highlights the incised pattern and gives the interior a sense of depth and movement, while the exterior maintains a more subdued, softly variegated finish.
Stig Lindberg was one of Sweden’s most prolific and versatile designers, active across ceramics, glass, textiles, and industrial design. At Gustavsberg, he developed both artistic stoneware and popular serial production lines. His ceramic work often merges whimsical motifs with strict formal control, as seen here in the juxtaposition of vibrant decoration within a restrained, modern vessel form. Gustavsberg, one of Sweden’s leading ceramic manufacturers throughout the 20th century, supported a number of innovative designers, with Lindberg remaining among its most celebrated contributors.
The bowl is in good vintage condition with minor signs of wear and light patina. The base shows traces of age and expected surface contact, while the glaze remains vibrant and intact.
