Stig Lindberg tray
This ceramic tray, model “Domino” was crafted in 1954 by Stig Lindberg and produced at the Gustavsberg factory in Sweden. Molded in earthenware, the tray takes a precise square form, its gently sloping sides rising to a flat rim. The relief-carved surface is achieved through press-molding, resulting in a grid of small, raised triangles that spiral outward from the center.
The central motif consists of concentric rings of isosceles triangles, each alternating in black and off-white, creating an optical illusion of rotation and depth. A continuous border of identical triangular elements frames this dynamic pattern, reinforcing its symmetry and rhythm. The surface has been finished with matte glazes—two distinct formulations applied in-register to mask the underlying clay body and accentuate the relief work.
Stig Lindberg (1916–1982) was a leading figure in Swedish mid-century design, celebrated for his playful yet rigorous approach to form and decoration. During his decades-long tenure at Gustavsberg, he experimented with both figurative and abstract surfaces. The “Domino” series exemplifies his fusion of utilitarian object and graphic abstraction, marrying functional rigor with visual experimentation.
Gustavsberg, founded in the 1820s, became internationally renowned in the mid-20th century through collaborations with designers such as Wilhelm Kåge and Lindberg himself. By the 1950s, their factory techniques had matured to allow limited-run pieces with complex relief and precise glazing, ensuring that each tray met exacting standards of uniformity and finish.
This example remains in very good vintage condition. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs; the glaze exhibits only minor surface wear consistent with careful use and age. Its dimensions are 20 cm by 20 cm with a height of 3.5 cm, corresponding to approximately 7.9 by 7.9 inches and 1.4 inches high.
