Stig Lindberg coffee table
This rare coffee table was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden during the 1950s. It combines a wooden frame in oak with a richly decorated enamel top, which is characteristic of Lindberg’s artistic approach where functional design is merged with expressive surface treatment. The table rests on angular legs that form a cross structure, giving it both stability and a sculptural presence. The enamel top features an abstract geometric and organic pattern in deep shades of blue, green, and black, a palette frequently explored by Lindberg in his work with ceramics and enamel.
Stig Lindberg (1916–1982) was one of Sweden’s most versatile and influential designers, known for his work in ceramics, glass, textiles, and industrial design. At Gustavsberg, he served as artistic director and developed a wide range of objects, from everyday tableware to highly experimental art pieces. His enamel works, produced during the 1950s and 60s, were an extension of his ceramic explorations, often marked by bold color schemes and playful motifs that brought fine art into the realm of furniture and interiors.
The table reflects the Scandinavian mid-century approach of combining craftsmanship with modern artistic expression. Its oak construction emphasizes durability and warmth, while the enamel surface introduces a decorative element rarely seen in furniture of the period, making it both a practical piece and an artistic statement.
The piece is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and patina consistent with age. The enamel surface shows preserved vibrancy, while the wooden frame has minor wear that underlines its history. This table exemplifies the meeting of utility and art that defined Stig Lindberg’s contribution to Swedish modernism.
