Stig Lindberg tray
This is a sculptural ceramic tray, model “Pungo” designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden during the mid-20th century. The tray is formed with an elongated, symmetrical silhouette that flares outward from each end into tapering, spout-like handles, giving it a leaf- or boat-like profile. The central body curves gently upward with a shallow concavity, and the entire form rests on a narrow footed base that creates a sense of elevation from the surface on which it sits.
The surface is finished in a matte white glaze, providing a soft visual base for the central graphic motif. A vertically aligned pattern of stylized geometric leaf or bird-like forms runs along the central axis, alternating between gold and black coloration. This decorative motif is hand-applied and showcases Lindberg’s signature visual language: playful abstraction with a precise, rhythmic structure.
The tray measures 35 cm in width, 14.5 cm in depth, and 7.5 cm in height (13.78 x 5.71 x 2.95 inches). The overall condition is good vintage with small signs of use including subtle wear on the surface and light marks consistent with age and handling.
Stig Lindberg (1916–1982) was one of Sweden’s most influential postwar designers. He worked across multiple media including ceramics, glass, textiles, and industrial design, but he is especially noted for his long-standing collaboration with Gustavsberg, where he served as artistic director. Lindberg’s work often blended whimsical patterns with innovative forms, positioning him as a central figure in the development of Swedish modern design.
Gustavsberg, founded in the early 19th century, became a leading Swedish ceramics manufacturer, particularly known for its artistic production under designers like Wilhelm Kåge and Stig Lindberg. The Pungo model reflects the company’s mid-century emphasis on expressive, artist-led studio ceramics that were simultaneously functional and decorative.
