Stig Lindberg vase

This very rare ceramic vase was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1954. It exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and organic aesthetic that define Scandinavian modern design. The vase features an ovoid body that tapers into a slender, elongated neck. Near the opening, the form is accentuated by a structured, textured pattern that provides both visual and tactile interest. The surface is finished with a variegated glaze in deep blue and green tones, creating a subtle gradient that emphasizes the curvature of the vase. The neck and rim present a contrasting golden-brown hue, highlighted by rhythmic decorative incising that marks the transition between body and opening.

Stig Lindberg (1916–1982) was one of Sweden’s most influential ceramic designers in the 20th century. His oeuvre spans playful yet sophisticated designs, ranging from whimsical figurines to highly sculptural vases. During his extensive collaboration with Gustavsberg, Lindberg pushed the boundaries of ceramic design through innovative glazing techniques and intricate surface treatments, merging artistic expression with functional craftsmanship.

Gustavsberg, established in 1825, was a leading Swedish porcelain and ceramic manufacturer. Under Lindberg’s artistic leadership in the mid-20th century, the company produced experimental and decorative ceramics that gained acclaim for their technical quality and distinctive aesthetic. This vase belongs to Lindberg’s more sculptural and artistic output, where form and surface treatment coalesce seamlessly.

The vase remains in excellent condition, with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations. The base bears Lindberg’s signature alongside the Gustavsberg studio mark, confirming its provenance and authenticity. Its dimensions measure 16 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height (6.3 by 11.8 inches).
