Stig Lindberg vase
This ceramic vase was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1960. It is made in stoneware with a dual-section construction that juxtaposes two distinct formal elements: a spherical upper body with a wide collar-like lip and a tall, concave base featuring intricate surface patterning. The glaze is executed in varying shades of green and blue, combining matte and semi-gloss finishes that accentuate the interplay of volume and texture.
The lower section of the vase is distinguished by its incised diamond pattern arranged in tight, repetitive bands that encircle the entire form. These geometric motifs are rendered in a darkened glaze against a green base tone, with subtle variations that suggest hand-finishing. The body flares outward and narrows at the midsection, introducing a sculptural articulation that contrasts with the smooth, full volume of the top half. The upper section, in contrast, is finished in a more uniform blue glaze with soft gradient transitions and minor spotting that emphasize the material’s depth.
Stig Lindberg’s work for Gustavsberg during this period was marked by a combination of playfulness and structural discipline. His ceramic pieces often reveal a synthesis of modern form with folk or ornamental influences, reflecting a broader Scandinavian postwar design philosophy that sought to humanize modernism. Gustavsberg, a leading Swedish porcelain manufacturer, supported Lindberg’s creative experimentation, and this piece is a fine example of their collaborative output—striking a balance between art object and functional vessel.
The vase is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use and age-related patina. The glaze remains vibrant and well-preserved, and the base retains the Gustavsberg label and signature incised markings.
