Stig Lindberg vase
This stoneware vase was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1962. It exhibits the technical precision and experimental surface treatment that characterize Lindberg’s mid-century ceramic output. The form is distinctly sculptural, with a waisted silhouette and flaring collar that contributes to the architectural presence of the piece.
The surface is glazed in varying shades of green and blue, shifting between deep turquoise and darker, mottled tones toward the rim. The upper and lower sections of the vase are smoothly glazed, while the central body is finished with a geometric, relief-patterned texture composed of diagonal and square impressions. This incised grid, combined with the oxidized glaze effect, adds both tactile and visual depth.
The vase is in good vintage condition, showing small signs of use and age-appropriate patina. The glaze retains a strong sheen and coloration with no structural cracks observed. The base carries the Gustavsberg studio stamp along with Lindberg’s incised signature, confirming its authenticity and origin.
Stig Lindberg (1916–1982) was one of Sweden’s most influential postwar designers. Working for Gustavsberg from the late 1930s into the 1980s, he was known for both whimsical decorative ceramics and functional forms, as well as industrial design and illustration. His studio works from the 1950s and 60s are among the most collected Swedish ceramics of the mid-century period, often reflecting an organic modernist style influenced by both fine art and emerging Scandinavian design principles.
Gustavsberg, active since the 19th century, was at the forefront of Swedish design during the postwar era, producing both industrial and studio ceramics. Under the creative direction of designers such as Wilhelm Kåge and Stig Lindberg, the factory became synonymous with innovation, craftsmanship, and modernist aesthetics.
The dimensions of the vase are 17.5 cm in height and 8 cm in diameter (approximately 6.9 inches high and 3.1 inches in diameter). This object represents a quintessential example of Scandinavian mid-century studio ceramics, valued both for its formal qualities and its connection to one of the period’s most celebrated ceramicists.
