Information

This rounded ceramic vase was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1962. It exemplifies the detailed surface experimentation and formal precision characteristic of Lindberg’s studio ceramics from the early 1960s, and represents a sculptural approach to functional objects.

The vase is formed with a globular body tapering sharply into a narrow, flared neck. The surface is fully covered with a textured pattern of recessed triangular motifs arranged in a grid, offering a rhythmic geometric relief. The upper portion, including the neck and shoulder, is glazed in mottled green with darker speckling, while the body displays vibrant shades of turquoise and blue with earthy brown undertones emerging through the recesses.

The condition is good, consistent with its vintage age. The glaze remains rich and intact, with a visible patina that contributes to the authentic character of the piece. There are light traces of wear typical of age and handling. The base is stamped with Gustavsberg’s hallmark and inscribed with Lindberg’s signature, confirming its provenance and origin.

Stig Lindberg (1916–1982) was a central figure in 20th-century Swedish design, known for his versatility across media including ceramics, industrial design, and illustration. His studio ceramics from the 1950s and 60s are celebrated for their organic shapes, intricate textures, and imaginative glazing techniques. Lindberg worked at Gustavsberg from the late 1930s until the 1980s, contributing to the studio’s identity as a hub for Scandinavian ceramic innovation.

Gustavsberg, located just outside of Stockholm, was one of the most prominent Swedish ceramic manufacturers during the mid-century period. Under the creative leadership of artists such as Wilhelm Kåge and Stig Lindberg, the studio produced both serial and unique art pieces, contributing significantly to the development of Scandinavian modernism in decorative arts.

The vase measures 9 cm in height and 9 cm in diameter (approximately 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches). With its compressed form and highly tactile surface, this object stands as a fine example of Lindberg’s ceramic vocabulary and the Gustavsberg studio’s refined material craftsmanship during the postwar period.
