Information

This rare and sculptural stool model ‘Palle’ was produced by K.J. Pettersson & Söner in Sweden during the 1970s. The designer remains unknown. The stool is crafted entirely from solid pine, which has been joined and laminated into a unified block. The wood is meticulously shaped into a geometric form with a rectangular profile and a deeply contoured saddle-shaped seat that introduces gentle curvature to an otherwise angular construction. The lamination is especially evident at the end grain, revealing a rich, tightly patterned grain structure that enhances the piece’s visual texture.

The pine has aged to a warm honey-brown tone with natural variations in color and grain. The surface is smooth with a matte finish, preserving the wood’s character. Rounded corners and softened edges provide a tactile contrast to the stool’s blocky form, resulting in a refined yet robust appearance. The open sides and simple structure combined with the carefully contoured seat reflect a design approach grounded in utility and clarity, characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century furniture.

The stool is in very good condition, exhibiting minor wear consistent with age and use. There are slight signs of patina along some edges, but the wood remains structurally sound and the original finish intact.

K.J. Pettersson & Söner was a lesser-known Swedish workshop active in the mid-20th century, known for producing small batches of high-quality wood furniture. Although the designer is unidentified, this stool aligns well with mid-century Scandinavian aesthetics, emphasizing natural materials, craftsmanship, and functional form.

The dimensions are 60 centimeters wide, 35 centimeters deep, and 36 centimeters high, with a seat height of 31 centimeters (approximately 23.6 x 13.8 x 14.2 inches, seat height 12.2 inches).
