Sven Mejlstrøm floor lamps

This is a rare pair of mid-century floor lamps designed by Sven Mejlstrøm and produced by Mejlstrøms Belysning in Norway during the 1960s. The lamps are executed in solid brass, presenting a clean, vertically-oriented profile that typifies the Scandinavian modernist approach—combining material honesty with minimal formal expression.

Each lamp consists of a circular base supporting a slender cylindrical shaft, topped with a discrete flanged collar detail. The polished brass surfaces show a naturally aged patina, with minor oxidation and tonal variation that enhances the depth and visual character of the metal. The upper portion features a two-arm structure designed to support a shade, although this pair is offered without shades, providing opportunities for customization or restoration according to the buyer’s preference.

The lamps retain their original socket hardware and are marked on the underside of the base with the manufacturer’s imprint: “MEJLSTRØMS BELYSNING TYPE 600”. This deeply etched detail confirms their provenance and links them to one of Norway’s lesser-known yet quality-focused lighting producers of the postwar period.

Sven Mejlstrøm’s design philosophy emphasized straightforward elegance and durable materials, drawing influences from both functionalist Scandinavian and international modernist schools. While his work remains relatively scarce on the market, this pair provides valuable insight into mid-century Norwegian lighting design and craftsmanship.

The lamps measure approximately 150 cm in height and 41 cm in diameter, including the shade dimensions (59.1 x 16.1 inches). Note that the current height may appear slightly reduced depending on the final shade selection. In their current state, these lamps function as sculptural lighting bases with strong architectural lines, making them suited for interior environments that emphasize authenticity, restraint, and Scandinavian heritage.
