Information

This is a rare floor lamp designed by Svend Aage Holm Sørensen and produced by Holm Sørensen & Co in Denmark during the 1950s. Executed in black lacquered metal and brass, the lamp is a compelling example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting that merges sculptural elegance with technical ingenuity.

The composition consists of two upright stems rising from a black cast-iron conical base. One stem supports a parabolic disc-shaped shade, mounted on an adjustable brass joint allowing the angle of light to be directed. The disc has a softly concave underside, diffusing light upward toward the ceiling and creating a reflected, ambient glow. The second stem features a tall, black metal cup that functions as a secondary light source or accent. The structure is visually unified by a curved rattan-wrapped detail bridging the two uprights—a functional brace as well as a naturalistic accent typical of Danish modernist sensitivity to material textures.

Svend Aage Holm Sørensen, an influential Danish designer active through the mid-20th century, was especially renowned for his sculptural lamps in metal. His work often featured inventive silhouettes and dynamic interplay of light and form, sometimes with perforated brass or lacquered finishes. This floor lamp reflects his experimentation with asymmetry, visual balance, and dual-function lighting.

Produced by Holm Sørensen & Co, the lamp aligns with the firm’s ethos of expressive yet refined craftsmanship. The use of high-quality materials such as solid brass, patinated black lacquer, and hand-applied detailing speaks to the artisanal nature of Danish lighting design during this period.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, with visible patina on the brass and some wear to the lacquered surfaces consistent with its age. All components appear original, and the structure is stable.

The dimensions are 36 cm in diameter (14.2 inches) and 156 cm in height (61.4 inches).
