Information

This very rare floor lamp was designed by the Danish lighting designer Svend Aage Holm Sørensen and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies the experimental Scandinavian modernist approach of the mid-century period, where geometric clarity and industrially inspired materials were combined to create highly functional yet sculptural objects.

The construction features a slim brass stem with a V-shaped black-lacquered steel base, ensuring stability while maintaining a minimal footprint. The shade is formed from perforated steel, lacquered in black on the exterior and white on the interior, creating a play between opacity and diffusion. Its distinctive folded form softens the light while emphasizing Holm Sørensen’s fascination with structure and texture. The perforations not only provide visual rhythm but also allow subtle light to filter through, enhancing the lamp’s atmospheric quality.

The piece remains in good vintage condition with clear signs of age and patina consistent with use. The brass shows natural oxidation, and the lacquered surfaces display minor wear, all of which contribute to its authenticity and historical presence. These traces of time underline the lamp’s originality and reinforce its value as a collectible mid-century Scandinavian design.

Holm Sørensen, active mainly during the 1940s–1960s, is known for his bold experimentation with cut metal and sculptural light forms. While he produced many pieces under his own name, collaborations with Nordic lighting manufacturers, including ASEA, further disseminated his distinctive aesthetic. ASEA, originally a Swedish electrical company, became known in the mid-20th century for producing technically innovative and stylistically advanced lighting, often in collaboration with leading Scandinavian designers.

This lamp reflects the mid-century Scandinavian ethos, balancing industrial materiality with an elegant, pared-down form. Its rare production and characteristic design language situate it as an important piece within both Holm Sørensen’s oeuvre and the wider history of Northern European lighting design.
