Information

This exceptionally rare table lamp was designed by Danish lighting designer Svend Aage Holm Sørensen and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. The piece is a characteristic example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, combining sculptural form, natural materials, and technical refinement into a cohesive and striking object.

The lamp features a large, organically shaped shade crafted from its original sprayed plastic, supported by vertical ribs that create a softly pleated, lantern-like form. The shade emits a diffused, warm glow when lit, enhancing its textural qualities and lending a gentle atmospheric light to its surroundings. The stem of the lamp is executed in black-lacquered metal, tapering elegantly upward from a three-pointed brass base that provides both stability and a refined architectural profile. A brass finial tops the structure, visually anchoring the composition and completing the symmetry.

Svend Aage Holm Sørensen (1913–2004) was known for his inventive approach to lighting design, often pushing the boundaries of material use and form. While many of his more industrial designs were produced under his own label, his collaborations with companies like ASEA reflect a refined and minimalist aesthetic rooted in the principles of functionalism and modern Scandinavian craftsmanship. His works are now considered highly collectible for their unique combination of sculptural form and atmospheric quality.

ASEA (Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget), primarily known as an electrical and power systems manufacturer, also produced lighting during the mid-20th century, often in collaboration with leading designers of the period. These lighting pieces are distinguished by their high production standards and characteristic Scandinavian modernist vocabulary.

This lamp is in good vintage condition, exhibiting signs of age and patina appropriate to its period. The brass elements have developed a warm tone over time, while the original shade retains structural integrity with expected signs of use.

The dimensions of the lamp are 35 cm in diameter and 62 cm in height (approximately 13.8 x 24.4 inches), making it a substantial table lamp suited for both functional and decorative roles in interior settings.
