Information

This rare and well-preserved pair of easy chairs, model Viken, was designed by Danish duo Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. The chairs exemplify Scandinavian mid-century design, prioritizing material honesty, ergonomic comfort, and a subtly sculptural form.

The frames are crafted from solid teak, showcasing warm reddish-brown hues with visible linear grain and a gently aged patina. The wood is smoothly contoured, particularly in the curved top rail of the backrest and the elegantly tapered legs, which contribute to the lightness and fluidity of the design. The armrests are seamlessly integrated into the vertical supports, reflecting the high level of cabinetmaking typical of Scandinavian modernism.

The seat and back cushions are upholstered in the original black leather, arranged in a tufted grid pattern with buttons securing the upholstery in a restrained geometric layout. The leather has developed a rich surface sheen and some natural creasing, consistent with age, but remains supple and intact, indicating careful use and preservation. The cushioning is moderately firm, offering both structure and comfort.

Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen were leading figures in Danish design during the mid-20th century, known for their collaborative work that blended architectural rigor with a sensitivity to material and proportion. Their designs often bridged traditional craftsmanship with modern principles. Although Danish, their collaboration with Swedish producer OPE Möbler for the Viken model highlights the close design and manufacturing ties between Scandinavian countries during the postwar period.

The Viken chairs represent the intersection of Danish design sensibility and Swedish production expertise. With their architectural clarity and the richness of teak and leather, they stand as strong examples of the broader Scandinavian modern tradition.

The dimensions of each chair are 76 cm wide, 72 cm deep, and 76 cm high (approximately 29.9 x 28.3 x 29.9 inches), with a seat height of 41 cm (approximately 16.1 inches). The condition is very good, with minor wear to the wood and leather, consistent with careful use and the original finish.
