Information

This rare pair of easy chairs, model 117, was designed by the Danish husband-and-wife team Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen during the 1950s. Produced by France & Daverkosen in Denmark, the chairs exemplify the refined craftsmanship and balanced proportions that defined Scandinavian mid-century modern furniture. France & Daverkosen, later renamed France & Søn, was among the most important Danish manufacturers of the postwar period, known for their collaborations with leading designers and their focus on quality materials and timeless forms.

The chairs are constructed from oak, displaying a warm natural tone and a distinctive sculptural frame with gently sloping armrests. The construction highlights the designers’ ability to merge organic shapes with functional stability, producing a frame that is both visually light and structurally solid. The oak frames carry a subtle patina that reflects careful use and age, enhancing the authenticity of the pieces while preserving their integrity.

The seating and back cushions have been newly reupholstered in Savak plain, a wool fabric that was widely used in Scandinavian design during the mid-century era. The neutral tone of the upholstery complements the oak frame, reinforcing the restrained yet sophisticated aesthetic. The cushions are generously proportioned, providing comfort without compromising the clarity of the chair’s silhouette.

These chairs embody the Scandinavian design ethos of simplicity, craftsmanship, and functionality, while also reflecting the signature style of Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen, who often worked with architectural clarity and understated elegance. They remain a notable example of the designers’ contribution to modern Danish furniture and their role in shaping the international recognition of Scandinavian design in the mid-20th century.
