Uno & Östen Kristiansson stool
This rare stool was designed by Uno and Östen Kristiansson and produced by Luxus in Vittsjö, Sweden, during the 1950s. The stool exemplifies the refined simplicity and material honesty characteristic of Scandinavian modern design. It is constructed from solid oak with a suspended seat of thick, black saddle leather secured by polished metal rings and adjustable straps beneath, an ingenious detail that reveals the designers’ focus on both structure and craft.
The triangular seat rests lightly between the three rounded and tapering oak legs, creating a sense of balance and visual tension. The leather seat is hand-stitched and molded to form a gently concave surface that adapts to the sitter, offering comfort and flexibility. The visible buckles and metal fittings are both functional and decorative, giving the piece a subtly architectural character.
Uno and Östen Kristiansson were among Sweden’s most inventive mid-century designers, known for their precise understanding of proportion and their combination of organic forms with modern materials. Produced by Luxus, their designs consistently displayed a high level of craftsmanship and a focus on the tactile and visual harmony of wood and leather.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition, showing only small signs of age and a rich patina to both the oak and leather.
