Viggo Boesen attrib. easy chairs
Rare and expressive pair of easy chairs attributed to Viggo Boesen and produced by Hos Wulff in Denmark during the 1930s. The chairs embody the organic and sculptural language associated with the Danish funkis and early Scandinavian modern movement, with softly curved silhouettes, generous proportions and elegantly shaped armrests executed in solid oak. The winged backrests and low, inviting stance give the chairs a distinctly architectural presence while maintaining an unusually warm and tactile character.
The frames are crafted from oak with beautifully aged surfaces and visible grain patterns throughout the arms and legs. The sculpted armrests feature refined organic curves and subtle transitions between the vertical supports and horizontal rests, highlighting the cabinetmaking quality of the period. The chairs retain their original velvet upholstery in a warm caramel and golden brown tone with contrasting piping and button tufted backrests, lending a rich depth and patinated surface texture that complements the oak frames exceptionally well.
Viggo Boesen was one of the leading Danish proponents of the so-called “funkis style” known for introducing softer and more biomorphic forms into Scandinavian modernism during the 1930s. His furniture designs are celebrated for their inviting comfort and understated elegance, often balancing traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde proportions and forms. Pieces produced by Hos Wulff from this period are particularly sought after due to their limited production and high level of craftsmanship.
The chairs remain in good vintage condition with age-related wear and patina consistent with use over time. The original velvet upholstery shows signs of usage and wear, contributing to the authentic character of the pieces. The oak frames display minor marks and natural patination. Reupholstery can be arranged upon request if desired.
