Viggo Boesen easy chairs
This very rare pair of lounge chairs, attributed to Viggo Boesen and produced by R. Wengler in Denmark, embodies the organic modernism and artisanal tradition that defined a distinctive strand of mid-century Scandinavian furniture design. Constructed from hand-bent rattan with detailed cane weaving, the chairs feature gently flowing forms with continuous curves that follow the natural lines of the human body, offering both comfort and visual softness.
The structure is composed of a sinuous frame formed from thick rattan canes, skillfully shaped to create integrated armrests and a low, reclined seating profile. The backrest and seat are woven with fine cane, forming a tightly patterned surface that supports the body while emphasizing the handmade character of the piece. The combination of thick and thin rattan elements, along with the fluent transitions between structural and surface components, is characteristic of the style developed by Boesen, who championed organic form and material expressiveness in contrast to the more linear, functionalist designs of his contemporaries.
R. Wengler, a Copenhagen-based workshop active since the early 20th century, was renowned for its work in wicker and rattan furniture, producing pieces of exceptional quality often in collaboration with leading designers. The craftsmanship visible in these chairs reflects Wengler’s mastery of the material, particularly in the smooth, continuous joints and the even, hand-woven cane surfaces.
The chairs remain in excellent vintage condition. The rattan structure is firm and stable, retaining its shape and integrity, while the surfaces show a consistent patina developed through careful use. Minor wear is present but unobtrusive, contributing to the authenticity and warmth of the material. These chairs are well-suited for interior spaces that emphasize natural materials and sculptural form.
Optional long sheepskin covers can be added to enhance the visual softness and tactile comfort of the chairs. These are available in a variety of colors to suit different interior palettes. As rare examples of Danish wicker design attributed to Viggo Boesen, these chairs represent a fusion of natural elegance, comfort, and enduring craftsmanship.
