Viggo Boesen easy chair
This rare easy chair was designed by Viggo Boesen and produced by R. Wengler in Copenhagen, Denmark. Originally created in 1936, the chair is crafted entirely from natural rattan and cane, embodying Boesen’s organic design ethos alongside the exceptional craftsmanship characteristic of Wengler’s workshop. The frame is constructed from steam-bent rattan elements that form a softly contoured, enveloping silhouette with curved armrests, a reclining backrest, and an integrated base. This design balances visual lightness with structural integrity through the expressive use of bent and woven cane components.
The original cushion accompanies the chair, upholstered in blue fabric with horizontal channel tufting that conforms ergonomically to the seat and back. The cushion displays an even patina and moderate signs of use consistent with its age. The rattan frame remains in very good condition, retaining its warm golden-brown tone and natural texture, with only minor wear typical for a vintage piece.
Viggo Boesen (1907–1985) was a Danish architect and designer associated with the funkis movement, notable for pioneering the use of rattan in furniture design during the 1930s and 1940s. His work combined functionalist principles with softer, expressive forms, contributing significantly to the early foundations of Danish modern design.
R. Wengler was among Denmark’s most respected manufacturers of rattan furniture, collaborating with prominent designers of the era. The metal maker’s plaque is still affixed to the frame, confirming provenance.
The chair measures 74.5 cm in width, 87 cm in depth, and 74.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 30 cm. These dimensions correspond to approximately 29.3 inches wide, 34.3 inches deep, 29.3 inches high, and a seat height of 11.8 inches.
