Wall lamps
These very rare and large wall lamps, produced in the 1940s by Edvard Hagman AB in Sweden, are striking examples of early 20th-century Scandinavian decorative lighting. Although the designer remains unknown, the craftsmanship and stylistic qualities suggest a high level of artistic and technical sophistication. Drawing heavily from nature, the lamps embrace a botanical motif that was popular in European lighting design during the interwar and immediate postwar periods.
Constructed from warm-toned brass, the framework of each lamp is modeled to resemble the graceful movement of plant stems and leaves. The brass elements are shaped with fluid curves, gently extending from the wall-mounted base in an organic, upward flow. The detailing is finely executed, with the sculpted leaves and tendrils creating a delicate visual rhythm. This naturalistic form is both decorative and structural, contributing to the sense of vitality and upward motion in the composition.
Each lamp supports multiple tulip-shaped glass shades, rendered in a soft, translucent yellow with a glossy finish. These shades, evocative of flower blossoms at the point of bloom, are mounted at varying heights and angles, mimicking the natural arrangement of petals and contributing to a layered, floral silhouette. When illuminated, the glass emits a warm, diffused light, enhancing the lamp’s atmospheric qualities and reinforcing its organic aesthetic.
The brass has developed a gentle patina, adding to the historical integrity of the pieces. Light surface wear is consistent with age but does not detract from the overall appearance; rather, it contributes to their charm and authenticity. The glass shades remain in excellent vintage condition, with no visible cracks or chips, and retain their original color and gloss.
Each lamp measures approximately 80 cm in height (31.5 inches), making them architecturally significant in scale. Their large size and sculptural presence make them suitable for installation in formal interiors—such as entryways, salons, or gallery walls—where they can serve as both functional lighting and decorative focal points.
Edvard Hagman AB was an established Swedish lighting manufacturer known for high-quality production, especially during the 1930s and 1940s. The company produced both standard lighting and more bespoke or limited-edition pieces, often marked by attention to detail and material refinement.
These wall lamps are not only rare due to their scale and preservation, but they also represent a unique convergence of sculptural lighting and applied decorative arts within the Swedish design tradition. Their graceful botanical form, warm brass detailing, and glowing tulip glass shades place them among the most poetic examples of vintage Scandinavian lighting from the mid-20th century.
