Information

This rare and large outdoor wall-mounted lamp was produced in Sweden by Fagerhults Belysning AB during the 1960s. While the designer remains unidentified, the lamp reflects a distinctly utilitarian Scandinavian mid-century modern aesthetic. It embodies functional minimalism combined with durable craftsmanship, typical of public and architectural lighting from the post-war era in Northern Europe.

The lamp is constructed from two primary materials: oxidized copper and clear blown glass. Over time, the copper has developed a natural patina, displaying varying hues of dark brown, green, and turquoise oxidation. This aging process contributes to the lamp’s authentic, weathered appearance. The upper portion of the lamp features a wide, conical copper top, which is slightly domed and transitions into a cylindrical chimney vent. Beneath this, the bell-shaped glass shade is wide at the base and tapers slightly toward the top. The thick-walled, clear glass is designed to resist weather conditions while diffusing light evenly, ensuring that the lamp functions well in outdoor environments. The glass mounts upward into the fixture, as specified on the original label (“Monteras med glaset uppåt”).

The mounting arm and base are also made of copper, showing visible signs of age-related verdigris. The arm extends horizontally from a circular wall plate, which is affixed with a single visible screw. This structural design ensures stable mounting on outdoor façades while allowing the lamp to project outward for even and effective illumination.

Designed for outdoor use, the lamp is labeled for a maximum of 100W, a clear indication of its robust materials and weatherproof form. Fagerhults Belysning AB, the manufacturer, has been a significant figure in Swedish industrial and public lighting since its founding in 1945. Known for its collaborations with engineers and designers, Fagerhults produced high-quality lighting systems that were efficient and durable, widely used across Scandinavia and beyond.

The style of the lamp aligns with Scandinavian modernism, which prioritizes practical elegance. Although it lacks decorative embellishment, its form is proportionally balanced and visually appealing. The contrast between the transparency of the glass and the matte, oxidized copper enhances its simple yet refined design.

The lamp measures 28 cm in width, 34.5 cm in depth, and 56 cm in height (approximately 11 inches wide, 13.6 inches deep, and 22 inches high).

The condition of the lamp is consistent with age and use, showing surface wear, oxidation, and minor residue inside the glass. However, it remains structurally intact and fully functional with present-day standard bulbs. This lamp is a durable and stylish example of outdoor lighting from the mid-20th century Scandinavian design tradition.
