Wilhelm Kåge bowl
This stoneware bowl, model Surrea, was designed by Wilhelm Kåge and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden during the 1950s. The bowl features an asymmetrical, sculptural form with a raised divider running through its center, creating a dynamic interplay of lines and surfaces. It is finished in Gustavsberg’s signature Carrara glaze, giving it a smooth, matte white surface with a subtle, marble-like quality.
The bowl is supported by a small, slightly elevated foot, which adds to its sense of lightness despite the solid stoneware body. The white glaze emphasizes the sharp contours and modernist character of the piece. The bowl is in good vintage condition with minor signs of use, consistent with its age.
Wilhelm Kåge (1889–1960) was a central figure in Swedish ceramics, serving as artistic director at Gustavsberg from 1917 until 1949. He was instrumental in transforming the company into a leader of modern Scandinavian design. His work ranges from functional tableware to experimental studio ceramics, and the Surrea series exemplifies his interest in sculptural, modernist forms.
This bowl is a fine representation of mid-century Scandinavian design, combining functionality with artistic expression. Its minimalist form and crisp white surface make it a versatile decorative object as well as a collectible example of Kåge’s work.
