Information

This stoneware vase, model Surrea, was designed by Wilhelm Kåge and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden during the 1950s. Wilhelm Kåge, a central figure in Swedish modernist design, was artistic director at Gustavsberg from the early 20th century into the 1940s. His work spanned functionalist utility ware, experimental stoneware, and expressive sculptural ceramics. The Surrea series, as indicated by the name, reflects a more sculptural and conceptual direction within his oeuvre.

The vase is formed in stoneware and finished in a matte Carrara glaze, a white surface treatment that mimics the look of marble. The glaze emphasizes form rather than surface decoration, staying in line with the mid-century preference for tactile and materially honest finishes. The form is compact but complex, characterized by a dual-opening mouth with internal partitioning, creating two symmetrical, curved compartments. Viewed from above, the silhouette resembles an abstracted yin-yang or mirrored teardrops, suggesting a sculptural interplay between positive and negative space.

The body is shaped with softened rectilinear sides that transition into cylindrical curvature, further defined by a raised ridge running vertically along the centerline of one face. This axial ridge provides visual tension and accentuates the balance between symmetry and asymmetry in the design. The vessel is both functional and highly sculptural, and despite its modest scale, it possesses a commanding spatial presence.

The vase is in good vintage condition, exhibiting light surface wear and patina consistent with age and material. There are minor scuffs and glaze imperfections which reflect both usage and the hand-finished nature of its production.

The dimensions are 8.5 cm wide, 7 cm deep, and 18.5 cm high, equivalent to approximately 3.3 inches by 2.8 inches by 7.3 inches.
