Wilhelm Kåge vase
This stoneware vase, model Surrea, was designed by Wilhelm Kåge and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden during the 1950s. The piece exemplifies Kåge’s sculptural approach to ceramic form and his exploration of modernist abstraction within the medium of stoneware.
The vase features a dynamic, asymmetrical silhouette with a narrow, vertical neck that extends from a bulbous base. A distinct ridge runs along one side, creating a visual and tactile tension that divides the form into light and shadow. The piece is finished in a Carrara glaze, a pure white semi-matte surface that evokes the qualities of marble while emphasizing the clarity of the contours. The glaze has a smooth, even texture that enhances the precision of the shape and accentuates its interplay of curves and edges.
Wilhelm Kåge (1889–1960) was one of Sweden’s most influential ceramic designers, serving as artistic director at Gustavsberg from 1917 until 1949. His work spans a wide range of expressions—from functional tableware to experimental art ceramics—and he was central to the evolution of Swedish modern design. The Surrea series represents Kåge’s later period, where his interest in sculptural and architectural ceramics became more pronounced, blending art and utility in an expressive yet disciplined way.
The vase remains in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of age. Its form and finish exemplify the restrained elegance characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century design, where material purity and sculptural integrity were central concerns.
