Information

This rare table lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in the 1950s, stands as a refined and characterful example of Scandinavian modern design. Known for his masterful command of form, proportion, and material contrast, Bergström created lighting pieces that were both elegant in silhouette and atmospheric in function—and this lamp is no exception.

The lamp features a finely fluted stem crafted from solid mahogany, rising with subtle tapering from a circular brass base. The rich, warm tone of the wood adds natural texture and visual depth, complemented by the vertical grooves that give the stem a sculptural quality while enhancing the vertical emphasis of the overall design.

The wide, shallow brass shade is a defining feature of the piece. Its perimeter is delicately perforated, allowing small pinpoints of light to escape when the lamp is illuminated. This detail not only softens the downward light and enhances ambient diffusion but also adds a decorative element that speaks to Bergström’s interest in combining functional lighting with ornamental refinement. The brass has developed a gentle patina over time, with variations in tone and surface texture that contribute to the lamp’s vintage authenticity and timeless appeal.

The lamp is fitted with an E27 socket, making it compatible with a range of contemporary bulbs. It is designed to provide both directional and ambient light—ideal for use on desks, sideboards, or bedside tables where functional lighting is needed without sacrificing aesthetic presence.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a pioneering Swedish designer and the founder of Ateljé Lyktan. His early collaborations with ASEA, one of Sweden’s leading lighting manufacturers, produced some of the most iconic Scandinavian lamps of the mid-20th century. His work is characterized by its meticulous craftsmanship, sculptural form, and the careful interplay between light and material.

The dimensions of the lamp are 32 cm in diameter and 45 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 12.6 inches in diameter and 17.7 inches high.
