Information

This rare large wall lamp, model 1012, also known as “Knight” was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. The design blends industrial rigor with refined decorative detailing, making it a distinct example of Bergström’s mid-century outdoor and architectural lighting concepts.

The primary structure of the lamp is made of copper, which has developed a weathered patina over time. This patina ranges from deep brown to verdigris, enhancing the visual depth and lending a historic character to the piece. The lamp body is predominantly blackened in tone due to aging and environmental exposure, further contributing to its robust and dignified appearance. A pointed finial crowns the fixture, reinforcing the architectural silhouette and giving the piece its “Knight” designation—evoking a sense of medieval armature or lantern design.

The central frosted glass shade is cylindrical with a slight taper toward the base. The surface of the glass is subtly textured, diffusing light gently and creating a soft, ambient glow. This shade is encased in a vertical cage formed by four evenly spaced metal rods, which both protect the glass and define the geometry of the piece. The wall-mounted arm and bracket are constructed from the same copper material and exhibit a clean, functional design, with a gently angled projection that balances both form and utility.

The condition of the lamp is consistent with vintage outdoor use. The copper shows signs of oxidation, minor corrosion, and surface weathering, while the glass remains structurally intact. Light marks and natural aging on the glass and metal contribute to its authentic, timeworn aesthetic. Despite its age, the lamp maintains structural integrity and continues to perform its lighting function effectively.

Hans Bergström, founder of Ateljé Lyktan, was a leading Swedish designer whose work bridged architectural pragmatism and Scandinavian elegance. Model 1012 demonstrates his attention to both practical design for outdoor or semi-industrial applications and refined visual presentation.

The lamp measures 24.5 cm in width, 30 cm in depth, and 60 cm in height (9.6 x 11.8 x 23.6 inches), giving it a substantial presence suitable for both exterior architectural facades and interior accent applications.
