Information

This rare set of wall lamps, a variant of model 1040, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. These mid-20th-century fixtures exemplify Bergström’s signature approach to lighting—where sculptural restraint meets subtle ornamentation, and material expression plays a vital role in creating atmospheric light.

Crafted from solid copper, the lamps feature cylindrical shades adorned with a finely perforated pattern. These perforations not only add a decorative element but also serve a functional purpose, allowing filtered light to escape through the metal surface. When illuminated, the perforations produce a soft, radiant glow accompanied by intricate light patterns on adjacent walls, contributing to a warm and dynamic lighting effect.

The copper has developed a natural patina over time, with tones ranging from deep bronze to soft greenish hues, a characteristic oxidation that adds depth and visual richness. This aging process enhances the lamps’ historic charm and affirms their authenticity as vintage objects. The patina varies subtly across the surfaces, making each piece unique in its finish.

Mounted on simple yet substantial backplates, the lamps maintain a balanced profile with dimensions of 14 cm in width, 23.5 cm in height, and 24.5 cm in depth (approximately 5.5 × 9.3 × 9.6 inches). The cylindrical form is elegantly proportioned, offering both direct and ambient illumination depending on placement and bulb type.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996), co-founder and artistic director of Ateljé Lyktan, was instrumental in shaping Sweden’s modern lighting movement. His designs from the 1940s through the 1960s are known for their functional rigor, graceful proportions, and subtle decorative detailing. In this copper variant of model 1040, Bergström’s sensibility is evident in the interplay between raw material and refined form.

Ateljé Lyktan, founded in 1934, quickly became one of Scandinavia’s most respected lighting manufacturers under Bergström’s creative leadership. The company was known for blending artisanal quality with modernist innovation, producing both custom and serial lighting that supported the architectural ideals of the time.

These wall lamps remain in very good vintage condition. The copper surfaces retain their patina without corrosion or damage, and the perforations are clean and structurally intact. They represent not only functional lighting fixtures but also sculptural elements, ideal for collectors and connoisseurs of Scandinavian design.

This rare variant of model 1040 offers a refined statement in both historical and contemporary interiors, pairing warm, atmospheric light with the tactile beauty of aged copper.
