Hans Bergström wall lamps
This is a rare pair of outdoor wall lamps designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the mid-20th century. These fixtures are composed entirely in copper and exemplify Scandinavian functionalism in their material choice and utilitarian design intended for architectural exteriors.
The lamps feature a symmetrical twin-cylinder configuration, with each lamp head constructed from perforated copper sheet metal. The perforations are evenly distributed in vertical slits, arranged in dense linear bands that allow light to pass while protecting the internal bulb from direct view. The cylindrical shades are mounted on a horizontal tubular arm affixed to a circular wall plate. The design achieves a balance of visual lightness and material durability, ideal for use in outdoor applications.
The copper surface has developed a natural verdigris patina over time, characteristic of exposed copper alloys. This oxidation contributes to the lamps’ visual depth and authenticity, with green and turquoise tones contrasting subtly against the darker underlying metal. Structurally, the lamps are in good condition with expected age-related wear, oxidation, and minor irregularities that do not compromise integrity or function.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a Swedish lighting designer and architect who co-founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934. His work is marked by an emphasis on combining architectural clarity with modern materials. Bergström played a critical role in establishing Ateljé Lyktan’s reputation as a leading innovator in Swedish lighting design. While best known for his interior fixtures, his exterior lamps like this pair show his sensitivity to site-specific functionality and weather-resistant construction.
Ateljé Lyktan was founded in Åhus and quickly gained recognition for its technically sophisticated and aesthetically progressive lighting. Their use of copper, brass, and perforated metals became a hallmark of Scandinavian postwar outdoor lighting.
