Hans Wegner easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model CH-27, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark in 1949, is a quintessential example of Scandinavian mid-century modernism. The design embodies Wegner’s dedication to organic materials, meticulous craftsmanship, and functional elegance.
The chairs feature solid oak frames, chosen for their durability and natural beauty. The visible wood grain enhances the warm, tactile quality of the pieces. The seat and backrest are composed of handwoven cane, which offers a visually light yet robust surface. This weaving technique provides both strength and flexibility, allowing the seating to conform comfortably to the sitter while maintaining breathability.
Wegner’s sculptural approach is evident in the gently curved armrests, angled seat, and elegantly tapered legs. The rear legs extend upward into a subtly curved backrest, creating a seamless flow between components. The side profile is distinctive, with open spaces beneath the armrests that contribute to the chairs’ airy, lightweight appearance.
Hans J. Wegner, a pivotal figure in Danish furniture design, was renowned for blending traditional craftsmanship with modernist aesthetics. His work for Carl Hansen & Søn remains celebrated for its simplicity, use of natural materials, and structural clarity.
The CH-27 is an early exploration by Wegner of cane seating, a technique he refined in later designs. Its rarity stems from the early production date and the meticulous craftsmanship involved.
Each chair measures approximately 72 centimeters in width, 72 centimeters in depth, and 77 centimeters in height (28.3 x 28.3 x 30.3 inches), with a seat height of 37 centimeters (14.6 inches). They remain in very good vintage condition, exhibiting a rich patina on the oak and subtle variations in the cane tone consistent with age and use.
