Hans Bergström table lamp
This rare mid-century table lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s, embodies the principles of Scandinavian modernism. The lamp combines patinated brass and dark-stained beech wood, two materials that were frequently used in mid-century Scandinavian design for their natural beauty and timeless appeal. The design emphasizes functional clarity and material integrity, which are key characteristics of the movement.
The lamp features a wide, shallow brass shade with a gently domed profile. The shade is finely perforated with slits encircling its lower edge, which allow ambient light to diffuse in a subtle and decorative pattern. The light source is suspended beneath the shade by two brass struts, attached to a tall, tapered column made of dark-stained, fluted beechwood. The base of the lamp is cast in brass and slightly domed, echoing the shape of the shade. It houses a recessed switch and cable outlet. The brass surfaces show a naturally aged patina, with signs of oxidation and surface marks that reflect the lamp’s age, while the beechwood section has a warm, matte finish that reveals the visible grain of the wood. When illuminated, the lamp casts a soft, atmospheric glow, with light diffusing laterally through the perforations and reflecting gently from the brass interior.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a leading figure in Swedish lighting design and the founder of Ateljé Lyktan. Known for his architectural precision and restrained elegance, Bergström’s designs often showcased a thoughtful use of materials and an eye for functionality. Throughout his career, he designed lighting for numerous Swedish manufacturers, including ASEA, where this lamp originates.
ASEA, initially founded as an electrical engineering company, became a significant producer of lighting during the mid-20th century. The company worked with renowned designers like Bergström, creating high-quality fixtures that blended technical innovation with modernist aesthetics.
This lamp is a quintessential example of Scandinavian modern design from the 1950s, marked by its simplicity of form, honest use of materials, and attention to craftsmanship. It represents a significant contribution to Swedish lighting design from the postwar era.
The lamp measures 31.5 cm in diameter and 45 cm in height (approximately 12.4 inches Ø x 17.7 inches H).
