Table lamps
These rare table lamps were produced by AB Armaturhantverk in Sweden during the 1960s. Each lamp features a conical base clad in natural brown leather, with visible stitching along the edges that highlights the craftsmanship involved. The bases support flared shades made of tightly interlaced natural cane in a tapered bell shape. This combination of organic leather and handwoven plant fiber creates a warm, tactile aesthetic that is both functional and decorative. When illuminated, the open cane weave diffuses light softly, casting a warm ambient glow and subtle patterned shadows in dim settings.
The cane shades are mounted over white porcelain bulb sockets, and the leather covering on the bases—likely stretched over an internal wooden or metal framework—is finished with clean seams and minimal embellishment, reflecting Scandinavian values of simplicity and skilled craftsmanship. One of the lamps retains the original foil label bearing the “Armaturhantverk” name along with the AH logo and illustration, confirming the lamps’ Swedish origin and artisanal production.
Although the designer is not identified, these lamps embody the material honesty, warm tactility, and modest scale typical of Swedish lighting design from this era. AB Armaturhantverk was recognized for its artisanal approach, often incorporating leather, cane, and brass in its mid-century lighting designs.
This pair exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century modernism, emphasizing domestic warmth, handcrafted materials, and an unpretentious sculptural form. The aesthetic is understated yet rich in material detail and texture.
Each lamp measures 35 cm in height with a shade diameter of 22 cm (approximately 13.8 by 8.7 inches). The condition is very good, showing minor age-related wear to the leather and natural irregularities inherent in the cane weaving.
