Tove & Edvard Kindt-Larsen desk
This very rare freestanding desk was designed by the Danish architect duo Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen and produced in Denmark by the cabinetmaker Thorald Madsens Snedkeri in the 1960s. Crafted in rosewood with discreet brass details, the desk reflects the architects’ refined and architectural approach to furniture design within the Scandinavian mid-century tradition.
The desk features a rectangular tabletop with a raised rear gallery forming a shallow ledge across the back. Below the top, a suspended row of drawers is integrated into the structure, creating a visually light and balanced composition. The slender, slightly tapered legs emphasize verticality and proportion, while the clean lines and precise joinery highlight the quality of craftsmanship rather than decorative elements.
The rosewood shows a rich, warm brown tone with expressive grain patterns, particularly visible on the tabletop and drawer fronts. Brass accents are used sparingly, providing a subtle contrast to the wood and reinforcing the functional character of the design. The piece is in good vintage condition with minor signs of use and has been restored with respect for the original materials and construction.
Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen were key figures in Danish modernism, known for their disciplined use of form, material honesty, and close relationship between architecture and furniture. Thorald Madsens Snedkeri was a respected cabinetmaking workshop, producing high-quality furniture in limited numbers for discerning clients. The desk exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century ideals, combining functionality, fine materials, and understated elegance.
