Ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp, model no. 1188, produced in the 1940s by Bröderna Malmströms Metallvarufabrik in Sweden, is a distinguished example of Swedish Modern lighting design. Though the designer remains unknown, the lamp reflects the design principles of the era—emphasizing clarity of form, material honesty, and refined decorative restraint.
Crafted in polished brass, the structure consists of a central vertical stem that descends from a conical ceiling mount. The brass has a lustrous golden tone that adds warmth and a subtle sense of opulence to the fixture. From the central axis, multiple slender arms extend outward in a radial formation. These arms are gently curved, introducing a sense of softness and movement, while maintaining a strict symmetrical arrangement that reinforces the chandelier’s formal balance.
Each arm terminates in a conical brass socket which holds a white fabric lampshade. The shades are tapered in profile and proportionally modest, offering a visual contrast to the reflective brass. Their soft texture and light-diffusing quality help temper the brightness of the bulbs, resulting in an ambient and evenly distributed light. The pairing of solid metal and translucent textile highlights the mid-century approach to mixing materials for both functional and aesthetic impact.
The chandelier combines Art Deco-influenced geometry with the functional elegance of Scandinavian modernism, making it suitable for a wide range of interior environments—from formal dining rooms to contemporary living spaces. The craftsmanship is evident in the seamless connections between components and the subtle curvature of the metalwork.
The dimensions of the lamp are 80 cm in width and 73 cm in height. In imperial units, this equates to approximately 31.5 inches wide and 28.7 inches high.
