Ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp, model 3588, was produced by Bröderna Malmströms Metallvarufabrik in Malmö, Sweden. Originally launched in 1933, the lamp is an example of early 20th-century Scandinavian lighting design influenced by functionalist ideals and evolving industrial aesthetics of the interwar period.
The lamp is constructed from chrome-plated metal and features two glass discs arranged in a double-ringed composition around a central opaline glass globe. The overall shape references the silhouette of the planet Saturn, giving the model its commonly used nickname—the “Saturn lamp”. The minimalist geometry and concentric layout of the diffusers are characteristic of a period when optical performance, diffusion quality, and architectural integration became central to lighting design.
The two horizontal rings are made of sandblasted and clear glass and are suspended with polished chrome connectors and fittings. The domed center globe, made of white opaline glass, provides a soft and evenly distributed illumination when lit. The reflective chrome mount, stem, and fastenings emphasize both the mechanical precision and decorative restraint of the piece.
Bröderna Malmströms Metallvarufabrik was a Malmö-based metal workshop known for its collaborations with designers and production of high-quality light fittings. The 3588 model is notable among their offerings for its distinct form and functional diffusion of light, designed to reduce glare and distribute light efficiently within a room—particularly in domestic and public interiors of the modernist era.
The lamp remains in excellent original condition with no cracks or significant wear to the glass or metal parts. It measures 60 cm in diameter and 65 cm in total height, corresponding to approximately 23.6 inches in diameter and 25.6 inches in height. This size, along with the symmetrical and floating appearance, makes it a striking centerpiece in a ceiling-mounted installation.
