Bent Karlby ceiling lamp

This rare and distinctive height-adjustable ceiling lamp was designed by Bent Karlby and produced by Lyfa in Denmark during the 1950s. The design exemplifies Karlby’s architectural sensibility and his flair for combining sculptural form with functional clarity. This particular model stands out through its dynamic symmetry and contrasting materials, which reflect the Danish modern approach to lighting design of the mid-century period.

The lamp features two opposing conical shades, one in polished copper and the other in matte black lacquered metal. The shades are joined by a U-shaped brass arm, creating a geometric yet balanced composition. The shades direct the light downward and slightly outward, offering effective task or ambient lighting depending on placement. The surfaces show minimal age-related patina, and the copper retains a warm, natural oxidation, consistent with careful vintage preservation.

Suspended from a telescopic height-adjustable mechanism, the lamp allows for an extension range from 75 cm to 145 cm (29.5 to 57 inches), which enhances its functionality in varied interior settings.

Bent Karlby (1912–1998) was one of Denmark’s foremost lighting designers of the post-war era. He is known for his work with Lyfa, where he developed a number of iconic fixtures noted for their formal clarity and technical precision. Karlby often employed conical or geometric forms and favored metal surfaces, using both painted and natural finishes to express functional details while maintaining sculptural integrity.
