Information

This very rare pair of floor lamps, model 9602, also known as the “Chinese Hat,” was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. The lamps are crafted from brass and woven cane, featuring a wide conical shade that defines their distinctive silhouette. Each lamp stands on a circular brass base supporting a slender stem wrapped in cane. The cane weaving extends seamlessly to the shade, which is reinforced by a brass finial at the top, combining durability with refined craftsmanship.

Paavo Tynell was a renowned Finnish designer celebrated for his contributions to Scandinavian modern lighting. His work is characterized by the skillful integration of natural materials with metal, creating lighting fixtures that soften industrial elements with organic warmth. Taito Oy, the manufacturer, was a key player in mid-century Finnish lighting production, known for its commitment to quality and design excellence.

The model 9602 was originally designed for the Hotel Aulanko in Finland, reflecting Tynell’s signature blend of functionality and aesthetic warmth. The wide conical shade diffuses light softly, enhancing the lamp’s sculptural presence within interior spaces.

The lamps are preserved in well-maintained vintage condition, showing natural patina on the brass components and minor signs of wear consistent with their age. Each lamp measures approximately 63 cm in diameter and 151 cm in height (24.8 x 24.8 x 59.4 inches).
