Paavo Tynell floor lamp
This floor lamp is a very rare custom-made piece designed by the Finnish designer Paavo Tynell for Hok Elanto. Produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s, it represents an exquisite example of mid-century Scandinavian design, blending functional elegance with artisanal craftsmanship. The lamp combines brass and cane, offering a warm and tactile aesthetic.
The lamp features a slender brass stem wrapped in cane, which adds a textured detail contrasting with the smooth metal surfaces. The conical lampshade is perforated with delicate patterns that create distinctive light effects when the lamp is illuminated. The shade is attached to an adjustable brass arm, allowing directional lighting. The base is a simple brass disc, providing stability without detracting from the overall minimalist design. The lamp measures 22.5 cm in width, 36 cm in depth, and 142 cm in height.
Paavo Tynell was a prominent figure in Finnish lighting design, known for his use of brass and innovative techniques that combined beauty with function. His designs often reflect a meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of light manipulation. Tynell’s work was significant in defining the Scandinavian modern aesthetic, emphasizing clean lines, natural materials, and timeless quality.
This particular lamp exhibits good vintage condition, showing signs of usage and a pleasant patina that enhances its authenticity and character. The brass surfaces have developed a warm oxidation, and the cane wrapping remains intact, contributing to the lamp’s unique texture.
