Paavo Tynell floor lamp
This rare floor lamp, model 9628, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito in Finland. It is an excellent example of Tynell’s refined approach to lighting design during the mid-century period, combining functionalism with a distinct decorative elegance.
The lamp is composed of brass and cane, giving it a warm, tactile quality. The conical brass shade features Tynell’s characteristic perforations, creating a soft and atmospheric play of light when illuminated. The shade is mounted on an adjustable joint, allowing for directional lighting. The upright stem is wrapped in cane, adding texture and a natural element that contrasts beautifully with the polished brass. The circular base is also made of brass, providing stability and a cohesive design language.
This piece is a fine representation of mid-century Scandinavian modern design, reflecting Tynell’s ability to balance materiality, form, and light. The lamp is in excellent condition, with only small signs of use and a rich patina that enhances its character and authenticity.
