Paavo Tynell floor lamps
This unique pair of floor lamps, model 9602—commonly known as the “Chinese Hat”—was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland. Introduced in the 1940s, the model exemplifies Tynell’s innovative approach to lighting, which often incorporated natural materials and elegant forms to produce both functional and atmospheric design objects. These lamps stand as significant examples of Scandinavian modernism interpreted through a distinctly poetic and handcrafted lens.
The defining feature of each lamp is the extra-large woven rattan shade, which flares outward in a broad, conical form reminiscent of traditional East Asian headwear. The natural golden-brown tones of the rattan and its tight, radial weave allow the material’s texture to play with the light, creating a warm and diffuse glow when the lamps are in use. The large diameter of the shade lends a dramatic yet airy presence to the lamp’s overall silhouette.
Supporting the shade is a polished brass base and stem construction. The brass has developed a warm patina over time, adding depth and historical character to the surface. The slender vertical stems are wrapped in cane, enhancing the tactile and visual connection to the rattan shade while emphasizing the handcrafted quality of the design. The interplay between the natural fibers and the reflective brass surface provides a balance of warmth and refinement.
Each lamp is equipped with dual light sockets, discretely housed beneath the shade. This functional element is executed with typical Tynell subtlety, prioritizing visual clarity and ease of use. The wiring is integrated cleanly, maintaining the lamp’s sculptural integrity.
Condition-wise, the lamps are well preserved with signs of age-appropriate wear. The brass components show some surface patina and minor marks, while the cane wrapping exhibits mild irregularities, consistent with vintage use. The rattan shades remain intact and structurally sound, with their coloration and weave preserved.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of the most influential figures in Finnish lighting design and a founding designer for Taito Oy. His work is celebrated for blending utilitarian lighting with delicate, often nature-inspired details. The model 9602 is among his most iconic floor lamp designs, illustrating his sensitivity to form, proportion, and material contrast.
Each lamp measures 147 cm in height and 78 cm in shade diameter. In inches, this corresponds to approximately 57.9 inches tall with a shade diameter of 30.7 inches.
