Stéphane Gimmy sculpture

This large bronze sculpture was created by Stéphane Gimmy and produced in Italy during the 1960s. It is a limited edition cast, signed and numbered “S. Gimmy 25/50” on the lower back edge.

The sculpture features a vertically elongated, tapering form rising from a square bronze base to a pointed apex. Its surface is irregular and faceted, marked by deeply incised vertical textures and areas of green and black oxidation. On the frontal plane, abstracted, relief-like human figures emerge subtly from the raw surface. This combination of geometric reduction and rough textural detail aligns the work with brutalist aesthetics and post-war sculptural abstraction. The use of oxidation and uneven finishes enhances the piece’s expressive depth and material honesty.

The sculpture is in very good overall condition, with an even natural patina and minor oxidation consistent with the artist’s intentions. The base shows expected signs of age and corrosion, typical of cast iron or untreated bronze.

Stéphane Gimmy (1924–2011), a French-born sculptor active mainly in Italy, was known for his experimental bronze forms during the mid-20th century. His work explores the intersection of abstraction and figuration, often featuring verticality, monumentality, and primal symbolism. Executed in small editions, his sculptures reveal affinities with Brutalism and Arte Povera through textured, oxidized metal and reductionist forms.

This sculpture exemplifies the brutalist idiom through its raw materiality, mass, presence, and abstract evocation of the human form.
