Gemla side table
This is a rare Swedish side table or coffee table produced by Gemla during the 1940s. The design reflects the transitional aesthetic of early mid-century Scandinavian furniture, where decorative craftsmanship and modernist reduction were often combined to produce functional, elegant forms.
The table features a round top in dark, richly grained mahogany veneer, framed by a subtle edge band in lighter solid beechwood. The contrast between the deep reddish-brown of the mahogany surface and the golden tone of the beech structure provides a visually refined balance of materials and color. The top is finely finished, with a lustrous sheen and a radial pattern that enhances the natural stripe of the mahogany grain.
The most distinctive feature lies in the construction of the legs. Each of the four legs is made of solid beech and is tapered with a sculptural Y-split near the apron, where a narrow inner rib extends up to support the underside of the tabletop. This open, forked detail introduces both lightness and decorative rhythm to the structure while maintaining stability. The leg profile subtly narrows toward the floor, emphasizing verticality and elegance.
Gemla, founded in 1861 in Diö, Sweden, is one of the country’s oldest furniture manufacturers and is historically known for pioneering the production of bentwood furniture. During the mid-20th century, the company also produced pieces with a more architectural and handcrafted quality, such as this table, using contrasting woods and inventive joinery.
The table measures 81 cm in diameter and 61 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 31.9 inches across and 24 inches tall. It is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of wear and patina consistent with age and use, particularly on the legs and edges. The structure is stable, and the surface retains a clean presentation with natural wood movement and character.
