Information

This large candlestick was designed by Swedish designer Gunnar Ander and produced by the renowned metalworks company Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. It is a striking example of Scandinavian mid-century design, where functionalism meets sculptural form, and reflects the post-war era’s emphasis on combining craftsmanship with elegant simplicity.

The candlestick is crafted from brass and black lacquered metal, a classic material combination frequently used in Scandinavian decorative arts of the period. The frame features six upward-reaching arms in a soft, organic arrangement, giving the piece a sculptural presence reminiscent of a stylized candelabrum or branching tree. The brass candleholders have a subtle fluted shape, adding texture and reflecting light beautifully against the black lacquered structure. The contrast between the warm brass and the matte black surface enhances its refined yet understated aesthetic.

Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) was one of Sweden’s most versatile designers, working across lighting, glass, and metalwork. He is best known for his work with Ystad Metall, where he created a series of candlesticks and lighting designs that have become emblematic of Scandinavian mid-century style. Ystad Metall, founded in 1833, was one of Sweden’s leading producers of decorative metal objects, known for their impeccable quality and collaboration with some of the country’s most prominent designers.

The piece is in good vintage condition with small signs of use, consistent with age and careful handling. Its sculptural silhouette and refined detailing make it a significant example of 1950s Scandinavian metalwork, both as a decorative object and as a piece of design history.
