Information

This six-arm candlestick was designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. The structure consists of black lacquered metal tubing arranged in a symmetrical, tree-like formation, with gently curved horizontal arms that support the candleholders. Each candleholder is shaped like a tulip or cup and made from polished brass, creating a striking contrast against the dark lacquered metal stems. A brass coil wraps around the central junction at the base, serving both to reinforce the construction and to provide a decorative accent.

Gunnar Ander was a Swedish designer and architect known for his work across furniture, glass, and lighting. His collaborations with Ystad Metall throughout the mid-20th century yielded refined and expressive decorative metal objects. Ander’s designs often strike a balance between sculptural form and functional clarity, characterized by clean lines and a rhythmic geometric sensibility. Ystad Metall, active from the early 1900s through the 1960s, was one of Sweden’s foremost manufacturers of decorative brassware and metal household goods, catering to both domestic and international markets with high-quality craftsmanship.

This candlestick exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century decorative arts, where functional design is elevated through subtle artistic treatment of materials and proportions. The piece is in good condition, showing noticeable wear to the black lacquer on the arms and minor oxidation and surface marks on the brass, consistent with age and use.

The dimensions measure 46 cm in width, 9 cm in depth, and 42 cm in height (approximately 18.1 x 3.5 x 16.5 inches).
