  • This is a pair of candlesticks designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. The candlesticks are made from wrought iron with inset green glass elements, combining a graphic structural composition with decorative accents in colored glass, characteristic of Ander’s work for Ystad Metall during the mid-century period.

Each candlestick features a symmetrical iron frame with four candleholders at the top, supported by vertical stems that connect to a horizontal bar. The ends of the bar curve downward in a squared-off U-shape, lending the form a softened geometric presence. Three circular green glass inserts are set within the horizontal plane, and a rectangular glass detail is placed below the central stem, adding visual rhythm and color contrast to the otherwise blackened iron structure. The base is supported by four splayed iron legs, forming a stable, tripod-like platform with a vertical symmetry that reinforces the architectural presence of the design.

The color palette is minimal, consisting of matte black iron and vivid translucent green, which enhances the play of light when the candlesticks are in use. The geometric and slightly whimsical design reflects the Scandinavian interpretation of modernism, where functionality is integrated with decorative expressiveness.

Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) was a Swedish architect and designer closely associated with Ystad Metall, for whom he developed numerous lighting and decorative objects throughout the 1940s and 1950s. His work often employed color, graphic line, and material contrast in visually engaging forms. Ystad Metall, active from the early 20th century until 1969, was a prominent Swedish manufacturer of decorative brass and ironware, and their partnership with Ander yielded many now-iconic pieces in mid-century Swedish design.

Each candlestick measures 28.5 cm in width, 15 cm in depth, and 32.5 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 11.2 inches by 5.9 inches by 12.8 inches. The condition is very good, with minor surface patina and wear to the iron consistent with age. The glass insets are intact and show no signs of damage. These candlesticks represent a bold and sculptural example of Ander’s mid-century decorative vocabulary, combining material honesty with abstract, rhythmic design.
