Information

This mid-century candlestick, designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1960s, exemplifies the designer’s characteristic synthesis of metal and colored glass within a refined, modernist framework. Composed of a brass base and a vibrant blue-green glass hurricane shade, the object highlights Ander’s consistent exploration of material contrast and functional ornamentation.

The candlestick’s base is formed from polished brass and features a shallow circular dish with a central holder for a taper candle. The dish includes a series of small perforations around its circumference—ventilation holes that also function as decorative elements, softening the solid brass surface with rhythmic detailing. Supporting the dish are three outward-curving brass legs, forming a tripod configuration that ensures stability while lending the form a sense of visual lightness.

The hurricane shade is made of blown glass in a rich turquoise hue, cylindrical in shape and open at the top. Its color and translucency create a vivid contrast with the warm golden tone of the brass. When in use, the chimney serves to protect the flame from drafts while refracting light in saturated tones, producing a softly glowing ambient effect. The integration of colored glass into functional objects was a signature approach of Ander’s, drawing attention to the expressive potential of utilitarian design.

Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) played a significant role in shaping Swedish decorative arts in the mid-20th century. Trained as an architect, his work spanned lighting, glass, and metalware, often with a focus on domestic accessories that balanced sculptural form with everyday practicality. His long-standing collaboration with Ystad Metall resulted in a distinctive body of work that combined craftsmanship, clean geometry, and material richness. Ystad Metall, active until 1969, was known for its high-quality production of decorative brass objects and worked with a number of leading designers of the era.

This candlestick is stamped “Ystad Metall, Made in Sweden” on the underside of the base, confirming its provenance. It measures 12 cm in diameter and 25 cm in height (approximately 4.7 × 9.8 inches). The condition is very good, with minor age-appropriate wear to the brass surface and faint marks consistent with use. The glass shade remains clear and free from cracks or chips. As a piece, it embodies the balance of decorative richness and functional clarity that defines the best of Scandinavian mid-century design.
